This technology is based drilled holes in the printed circuit boards (PCB) where conventional electronic component are inserted into. Assembly can be made either manually or by using automatic machines, and components are welded on the opposite side.
Although this technology is gradually being replaced by technology SMD (surface mounting devices) or surface mount technology SMT, is still the best option when you require high mechanical performance in welding, like in bulky components such as electrolytic capacitors, or that require high mounting strength as in the case of electromechanical relays.
Often the hole system is chosen by design engineers for prototyping as higher dimensions make it easier to handle, insert and weld the components.
